Hello all who read this blog. Today I want to pay tribute to a woman that most of the world may not know, but has been well loved and respected in the ministry of music. This woman is Olivia McClurkin.
I remember when she first came to my church back in the early 90's and sang in the choir along with her sister. When she opened her mouth, she sang like Heaven was right there in the church. Me being musically inclined and sings, she blew me away. I mean her voice was something I had never heard before and I was very impressed (even at 10 years old when I first heard her).
Throughout the years, she sang background for Whitney Houston as well as her brother, Pastor (yes, pastor) Donnie McClurkin. She even was the Minister of Music of my church youth choir for about 3 years. This woman taught me alot musically, and also witnessed to us spiritually about the power of prayer and consecration.
I always believed that she had the voice that would take her places and garner her alot of success, but I guess God wanted her to do other things to witness to people through her life's testimony. She was not ashamed to tell her story of how she overcame drug addiction, abuse growing up, and other things she experienced in life. She wasn't afraid to tell it. Truthfully, I applaud her for that. Olivia may not have been a celebrity in the world, but to me she was and always will be a shining star.
So here's to Olivia: You will be loved and missed beyond measure. Your life was your testimony that God can save the sinner as well as the saint. May your musical legacy live on and not be forgotten. You were more than a conqueror.
Rest In Peace
Olivia McClurkin
